Hi!
My name is Jake (Jacob) Smith, and I am a York-based historian and artist with a specialism in social and queer art history. I recently graduated from the University of York with a BA(Hons) in Curating and Art History, having dedicated the past few years to uncovering hidden narratives. My work spans historical research, curation, art, and advocacy.
See below to find out more about me, or feel free to contact me!
My academic focus has been on social and queer history. With a long-term focus on the social history of Landowner/Lesbian Anne Lister, the topic of my BA dissertation is "The Many Faces of Anne Lister".
Since graduating from the University of York in 2026 with a Second Class Honours: Division One in Curating and Art History, I have been building an audience for my work through projects such as my blog.

My artwork spans several mediums, from traditional work to digital & photography to experimental/academic-adjacent work.
My current project "Alone in York" explores liminality through the lens of neurodivergent experiences in modern life.

My undergraduate degree in Curating and Art History is from the University of York, with a 2:1. My areas of focus included architectural history, societal history, and fashion.

Looking Forward: Since completing my BA, I have been working to better position myself in the ethics & law side of GLAM to prepare myself for an LLM in Art Law.
I attended Calderdale College, Halifax, where I completed a Level 3 Extended BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design Practice under the tutelage of Ruth, Jeannie, and Lisa, achieving a D*DD grade.
I attended All Saints Catholic College, Huddersfield, where I completed my GCSEs, including Art, History, Photography, and Religious Studies.
I am a graduate of Curating and Art History from the University of York, where I specialised in social and political curating. My practice is driven by the belief that everybody should understand history, which is most impactful when it is inclusive, ethically researched, and accessible to the widest possible audience.
My passion for heritage was sparked at an early age by the storytelling of historians such as Lucy Worsley and Ruth Goodman, who brought the past to life. Experiencing complex social histories through their eyes made history seem vivid, and inspired me to work towards uncovering "hidden" narratives in museums and history.
My professional competencies include:
• Curatorial Research: Specialised focus on Queer and Social Representation in Museums and History (as seen in my BA Dissertation "The Many Faces of Anne Lister"), exploring how to effectively combine diverse narratives and make them visible in traditional frameworks.
• Art Law & Ethics: Deep interest in the legal and ethical considerations of the heritage and art sectors, supported by Art Law studies at York Law School.
• Museum Operations: Hands-on experience in collections research, care, and management, as well as exhibition planning through several projects and a curatorial internship at Scarborough Museums and Galleries under Head of Collections Dorcas Taylor.
• Accessibility Leadership: Proven record of accessibility advocacy and inclusion in professional and museological environments, shown in exhibition management and my role as Disability and Access Officer at Langwith College (University of York Students' Union).
I am currently seeking opportunities in the heritage sector. I am open to roles such as Assistant Curator, Collections Assistant, Heritage Researcher, and others. I'd love to connect to discuss these further.
